Welding procedures, weld repair and fabrication advisory.

Your client wants your WPSs. Your repair needs a procedure. The inspector wants a weld map. Veristruct prepares the welding documentation fabricators and maintenance teams are asked for, to AS/NZS 1554.1 and related standards, with the input of a certified welding supervisor (AS/NZS 2214).

When to call

  • A principal or tender asks for WPSs, weld maps or an ITP you do not have yet.
  • A job needs a procedure outside what your existing procedures cover.
  • NDT has rejected welds and you need a repair plan.
  • A critical component needs a written weld repair procedure, not a verbal instruction.
  • You need to choose NDT methods and acceptance criteria for a job.

What Veristruct prepares

  1. Welding procedure specifications (WPS). Written on the prequalified route wherever the joint preparation, process, position, parent material and consumable allow it, because that is usually the fastest and cheapest route. Prequalified status still depends on your workmanship and preheat, and on a macro test record you hold.
  2. Procedure qualification records (PQR). Where a procedure must be qualified by testing, the test piece is planned, testing is coordinated with an accredited laboratory, and the welding record and test results are compiled into the PQR for your qualification and approval.
  3. Weld maps and joint schedules that tie every weld on the drawing to its procedure, its category and its inspection.
  4. Weld repair procedures: excavation, confirmation of removal, the welding procedure, preheat, sequence and re-inspection.
  5. NDT method selection and the applicable acceptance criteria, so the method suits the imperfections that matter for your joint and weld category, within the extent your principal specifies.
  6. Welding QA and ITP packs for the job, ready for the principal's review.
Prepared for your qualification and approval

Veristruct prepares the welding documentation. Qualification and approval of procedures and welders stay with the fabricator and the principal. Where a job needs an engineer's certification, it is arranged through registered engineering partners and priced as its own line.

Fixed-scope documentation packs

For fabricators working to a client's design, the welding and inspection documentation is available as a fixed-scope pack in three sizes, from a single joint family up to a full job set. Turnaround starts at three business days from receipt of complete information: drawings, materials, weld categories, the processes you use, and the standard the job calls for. Macro tests and any procedure testing sit with your workshop and the laboratory, on top of that. Pricing is on request.

From the workshop floor up

Veristruct's principal came into engineering through heavy fabrication and holds a welding supervisor certificate to AS/NZS 2214. Procedures are written to be welded, not just filed: positions a welder can reach, preparations the workshop can cut, and parameters the equipment can run.

Standards worked to

  • AS/NZS 1554.1 (structural steel welding)
  • AS/NZS 1554.4 (quenched and tempered steels)
  • AS/NZS 1554.5 (structures subject to high levels of fatigue loading)
  • AS 3992 (pressure equipment welding qualification, by arrangement)
  • AS/NZS ISO 3834 (welding quality)
  • AS 1101.3 (welding and NDT symbols)
  • AS 2205 (destructive testing of welds)
Prefer to do it in-house?

The Veristruct WPS Tool drafts a WPS in three steps, starting from the joint preparations and processes the standard tabulates as prequalified. You complete it from your controlled copy and hold the evidence that makes it prequalified, including the macro test record. It also drafts a repair procedure for each rejected indication in an NDT report, marked for review before use.

Questions Asked

Welding procedure FAQs.

What is the difference between a WPS and a PQR?

A WPS (welding procedure specification) tells the welder how to make the weld: preparation, process, consumable, position, preheat and parameters. A PQR (procedure qualification record) is the evidence that the procedure works: how the test piece was welded and the results of its tests. Read the full explanation.

Does a prequalified WPS still need testing?

Yes, in one respect. Prequalification removes qualification by mechanical testing, but the 2014 edition of AS/NZS 1554.1 makes documentary evidence of a satisfactory macro test one of the conditions of a prequalified procedure. If you do not already hold that record, a test piece has to be welded, sectioned and examined. Check the qualification clause in your controlled copy for how it applies to your joints.

Can you certify our welding procedures?

No. Veristruct prepares the documentation for your qualification and approval. Where a job needs an engineer's certification, it is arranged through registered engineering partners.

Do you provide welding supervision?

Veristruct's principal holds a welding supervisor certificate to AS/NZS 2214 (structural steel). Procedure and documentation review is available remotely. Acting as the nominated welding supervisor on a job means supervising the welding itself, so it needs time on site, is arranged job by job, and should be confirmed with your principal first.

Which standards do you work to?

Mainly AS/NZS 1554.1 for structural steel, with Part 4 for high-strength quenched and tempered steels and Part 5 for structures subject to high levels of fatigue loading. Pressure equipment welding qualification to AS 3992 is by arrangement and confirmed job by job. Client and OEM specifications are worked to where they apply.

How quickly can we get a WPS?

Fixed-scope documentation packs start at three business days from complete information: drawings, materials, weld categories, processes and the standard the job calls for. A prequalified procedure also needs a macro test record, and a procedure qualified by testing needs its test piece welded and tested. That time sits with your workshop and the laboratory, on top of the documentation.
